Singleton sits on the banks of the Hunter River, an hour's drive from Newcastle and less than 2.5 hours from Sydney. Alternatively, a longer drive between Singleton and Sydney's western suburbs goes through the beautiful Wollemi National Park.

As the town was established in the 1820s, it has plenty of local history and preserved architecture. Take the heritage walk, with a brochure and map available from the Visitor Information Centre. Historic buildings include the original courthouse (built in 1841), several churches and traditional Australian pubs. Drive out into the countryside to see a number of old mansions nestled in the valley.

The Singleton Sundial is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, weighing a massive 30 tonnes. Gardens, wineries, and the Infantry Museum offer plenty to explore. About half an hour's drive north is Lake St Clair, aka Gelnnies Creek Dam. It's a pleasant retreat with campsites, barbecue areas and a boat ramp.
