Explore Wynyard & Burnie from the Airport
Burnie Airport (also called Burnie Wynyard Airport) has regular flights to Melbourne, King Island and Launceston. The airport is actually located in nearby town Wynyard, about 25min drive from Burnie, so the easiest way to get around is to pick up a hire car straight from the airport.
Burnie is one of those rare Australian cities with north-facing ocean views. If you're interested in exploring Tasmania's rich natural heritage, Burnie is a great base for day trips to the Tarkine and Cradle Mountain.
At Makers Workshop buy locally produced hand-made paper or try it out yourself. The famous "roo poo" paper is a great buy for a unique gift wrap! Here you can also sample another local ware - cheese, with several varieties to choose from.
Take a free tour at Little Penguin Observation Centre to see Fairy Penguins waddle up to their burrows at dusk. Burnie Region Museum includes a Pioneer Village reproducing real Burnie businesses from the Federation period 1890-1910.
